“New Directions in Service Learning”
On May 6, 2008, the Rural Medical Educators (RME) Annual Conference was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. This year’s conference theme focused on Service Learning with keynote Dr. Darrell Kirch, President & CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). A record number of Rural Medical Education students, staff and faculty had an opportunity to share innovations in their medical education training programs from around the country. Attendance at this year’s conference served as the highest ever recorded in the history of the Rural Medical Educators Group. Next year’s RME Annual Conference will be held in Miami Beach, Florida, Monday, May 4, 2009

7:30 AM – 8:00 AM Continental breakfast
8:00 AM – 8:15 AM Welcome & Introductions
Jim Boulger, PhD, Senior Co-Chair RME Executive Committee and Matthew Hunsaker, MD, Junior Co-Chair RME Executive Committee will welcome the 2008 Annual RME Conference attendees.
8:15 AM- 9:15 AM Keynote
Darrell Kirch, MD, President & CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)—The AAMC represents all the nation’s medical schools, teaching hospitals, and academic societies. As the head of this organization, Dr. Kirch brings an important perspective to this year’s conference, and attendees can expect to hear about the organization’s current role in service learning and community benefit from the national standpoint. 9:15 AM – 10:30 AM “Service-Learning: What’s Different About Rural?”
Hilda Heady, MSW, Associate Vice President for Rural Health at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, West Virginia University; Executive Director of the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships; and Program Director of the West Virginia Area Health Education Center—This session provides a specific view into rural health service learning and community benefit with some great firsthand examples from West Virginia. 10:30 AM – 10:45 AM Break
10:45 AM – 11:45 AM Direct Effects of Katrina on Elements of Training
Rick Strieffer, MD, Professor & Chairman, Tulane University School of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine—Dr. Strieffer will lead this panel discussion on the elements of training that were severely disrupted post-Katrina and the necessary changes in the health care systems, as well as the effects on the residencies and teaching hospitals. 12:00 PM– 1:00 PM Lunch - networking discussion.
1:00 PM – 1:45 PM 2008 Tour of Rural Medical Education
RME students, staff and/or faculty will discuss innovations in their rural medical education programs with a special focus on Service Learning.
1:45 PM – 2:45 PM Small Group Interaction/Response - Generating New Ideas for Service Learning
Attendees will break out into small groups to discuss perspectives generated from the morning presentations.
2:30 PM – 3:00 PM Break
3:00 PM– 4:30 PM “Students Respond: Making Rural Medical Education Even Better”
Rural Health Students Group & RME Student Caucus—students from rural programs from around the country will have an opportunity (based on papers submitted) to speak about their experiences describing a meaningful rural training experience and an idea for how it could be made even better.
4:30 PM - 5:00 PM Business Meeting – RME members will conduct the annual business meeting. (RME Student Caucus update to take place during this time).
5:30 PM– 7:00 PM RME Reception
